B is for Biggest Travel Regrets. Admittedly I try not to have regrets. I am very much of the opinion that you can’t change the past, so don’t dwell, just move forward with your life. That being said, there are maybe a few things I could have done differently. Thanks to the wonderful Roo Around the World for nominating me to do this.
1. Throwing tantrums in Sydney
Ok so I was 9 but that being said I threw some quite dramatic wobblers when I first met my aunt and uncle in Sydney. I was a bit spoilt as a kid, in that I was used to getting what I wanted. I still haven’t quite mastered the idea of compromise but I like to think I’m a lot more laid back.
2. Overplanning my first solo trip.
My first trip to Oz all the flights were booked before I left Wales. I planned for ages and it meant that I had a schedule to keep to. While I still really enjoyed my time in Oz, it would have been nice to maybe have spent more time in Launceston with my wonderful host there, and more time with my aunt and uncle who I returned to and showed that I had grown up quite a bit.
3. Not exploring more of Eastern Europe
My year abroad was brilliant, I didn’t stop the whole time and it was thoroughly epic. However, after I came back from India in 2012 I had 2 months sat on my parents sofa, when I could have easily booked a couple of Ryanair flights to Poland, Lithuania etc. Of the East I have only been to Czech Rep, Hungary and Croatia, and didn’t spend nearly enough time there.
4. Becoming a suit.
While I still thoroughly embrace the travel lifestyle I unwittingly became a suit. I ended up with only 10 weeks holiday a year and while that SOUNDS a lot, it doesn’t work for me. I’m working on changing this. I’m planning a change of contract and a 6 weeks excursion at the moment, though ultimately I might have to work on travelling long term.
5. Thinking I know it all.
Ah what a prat I am. Not boning up on local knowledge enough, and thinking that being well travelled makes you impenetrable. This air of twatery has led to me having my passport stolen in Prague and being scammed in Morocco, but at least each time a lesson was learnt.
Hope you enjoyed reading my mistakes. Though ultimately each one is a lesson that I have tried my best to learn from my mistakes.
I nominate Stephanie from Pearls and Passports, Jessica from A Passion and A Passport and Emma from Gotta Keep Movin’
